Pro-Dev and Clock Hours

Please make sure you have registered on the website for your clock hours.  You will only get verified for the sessions you have registered for even if you signed in on paper, you MUST register on PRO-DEV site for verification.

Tardy slips and Lunch Tickets

When a student arrives late, we will be giving them a green ticket for lunch (replaces the pink) as they will automatically get choice for their lunch option if they are hot lunch.  This will save a step and hopefully alleviate shortages.

Dress Code

Please remember to reinforce the PSD dress code that can be found in the handbook.  Extra clothing is available in the nurse’s office if needed.

Textbook Accountability Notification

As we move into a new era of textbook accountability, here are important end of the year steps to follow regarding textbook inventory, lost instructional materials, notification, and bookkeeping.

1.    Teachers need to give librarians a list of textbooks that have not been returned by students by June 6, 2014 (Tuesday). Librarians will then need to mark the textbook as lost in Destiny for a fine to be assessed by June 12 (Thursday). Librarians will provide each student who has not returned instructional materials with a Destiny notice listing the lost item(s) and potential fine if not returned by June 12 (Thursday).

2.   While we want all students to return ‘lost’ or missing items to their school prior to June 19, the drop dead date for students to be able to return items without being assessed a fine is Tuesday, July 15.

3.   On June 13, parents of any student still listed as missing a textbook or other instructional item will receive an email through Destiny with the following message:

·       “The last date students can return items without being assessed a fine is Tuesday, July 15. Your child is currently listed as owing a fine for a textbook or other instructional item. Please return the missing item to your child’s school by June 19.

·       After June 19, students can return instructional materials to ESC, 302 2nd St SE,

4.   After July 31, all Destiny missing items will be changed to fines and migrated to the eSchoolsPlus student files. From there, office managers and librarians can access those who owe fines. Until July 31, office managers will need to check both eSchool and Destiny for fines and apply paid fines in Destiny.

Retiring or Transferring to new school

·       All District purchased instructional materials in your classroom are to remain at the school where they are currently located. Materials are not to be moved to a new school. All instructional materials are inventoried for the school they are in and need to remain in the school for the teacher who will be coming into your class when you leave.

·       All barcoded teacher materials in your classroom will need to be checked in via Destiny to ensure everything is accounted for in order to transfer to the new teacher. Student materials do not need to be checked in.

·       If you are a K-5 teacher you will need to inventory your Bridges/Number Corner kit to identify any missing items to be replaced.

·       If you are a K-1 teacher you will need to inventory your Read Well kits to ensure all items in the kits are accounted for.

·       Once teachers have completed their inventory, they are to contact Lori Miller (Textbook & Media Center Secretary) and request items that are missing in their inventory.

Moving Grade Levels (within the same building)

·       Teacher materials at your new grade level will need to be checked out to you via Destiny.

·       If you have any questions about these procedures, please contact Lori Miller, Sue Andre, or myself.

Hello from the Benefits Office!

To comply with new State reporting requirements, the district is required to collect and report information about each employee’s benefit eligible dependents. Please complete the Dependent Information section in Employee Online by adding the requested information for each of your benefit eligible dependents (see definition below, and in employee online).

You will be asked to supply social security numbers for each of your eligible dependents; please have that information readily available prior to starting this process.  If your spouse/domestic partner is also an employee of the district, both are required to complete this process. Please list all eligible dependents on both employee online accounts.

Eligible dependents include:

·   Spouse – the person who is currently your legal spouse

·   Same and Opposite Sex Domestic Partner – your domestic partner if you meet all of the eligibility requirements outlined in the Affidavit of Domestic Partnership

·    Child, Stepchild or the Child of Your Domestic Partner – if the child is your natural or legally adopted child, your stepchild, the child of your domestic partner or a child placed in your home for adoption; or if the child resides with you or you are legally responsible for providing their health care under the terms of a divorce decree or Qualified Medical Child Support Order (QMSO); or if the child has not reached the age of 26 or is totally or permanently disabled and the disability began prior to the end of the calendar year in which he or she turned age 26.

We appreciate your assistance in providing this State required data. This information will be kept confidential and will only be shared in compliance with State requirements.

Puyallup Public Library launches

2014 Summer Reading Program for Children!  Fizz, Boom, Read!

Experiment and explore a good book this summer! Officially, summer reading begins June 16 and will run through August 16.  Readers from babies through 12 years old will celebrate “Fizz, Boom, Read!” with music, pattern recognition, robots, flying gizmos, baseball, and so much more.  The 2014 summer reading program is open to young people of all abilities, even toddlers and preschoolers can participate if an adult reads aloud to them.  There will be separate summer reading programs for teens and adults.

Designed to keep young people reading during the long hot days of summer, this summer reading program offers fun incentives to help children maintain their reading skills.  All children who spend time reading, listening to an audio book, or being read to, can track their minutes online to enter drawings for great prizes and free goodies at local retailers.  Plus, every child who reads (or is read to) at least 15 hours this summer will get a FREE book and a ticket to Northwest Trek/Pt. Defiance Zoo & Aquarium.  The summer reading program at the Puyallup Public Library is generously funded by the Friends of the Puyallup Library and many local businesses.  For more information call 253-841-5454 or visit our website at www.puyalluplibrary.org.

The librarian will be coming to Spinning on 5/29 to speak with students during lunch about the summer programs at the library.

Prep for Library Inventory

It would be very helpful if you could include a reminder in your weekly newsletters that all overdue books and fines are due immediately, and that all library books will be due by June 9th.

We currently have almost 50 overdue books (some past due for over a month) and several unpaid fines. Jeannine and I make phone calls, send emails and send notices home, but we thought another “voice” might be helpful.

Placement Meetings

You will be receiving an invitation for a placement meeting to discuss next year classes.  A sub will be provided for you for the time that you will be out of your classroom.  Please bring worksheets and requested materials.

Report Card Information

With the statewide implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), it was necessary to update our current elementary report card.  A committee comprised of teachers and administrators from around the district was formed and tasked with overseeing this work.  The committee has worked diligently to redesign an update the elementary report card for grades K-6.  As part of the report card update, recommended language that aligns with the CCSS was proposed along with some formatting changes.  Some of the formatting changes include:

·       The option to include generated comments without having to type narratives

·       “Behaviors that promote learning” has been renamed “Citizenship”

·       The “Citizenship” grading scale aligns with the academic grading scale

·       Data displays with current trimester assessment information
With the revision of our elementary report card, the following guidelines will remain in effect:

1.   The definition of a report card comment is a minimum of 1 to 2 sentences (generated or narrative).

2.   When a student receives a 1, 2, or N as a mark for any grading period, a comment is required to explain why the student received the mark.

3.   When a student receives a 3 or a 4 as a mark for any grading period, a comment is encouraged, but not required.

4.   Every student will receive at least two comments for the final grading period regardless of the marks received.

5.   Requirements including timelines for the reading of report cards by principals must be consistent across the district.

It is essential that we obtain feedback from our elementary teachers and building administrators in order to make an informed decision before finalizing our recommendations.   Please take a moment to review the attached report cards in draft form (every standard in the first trimester has been filled out; please note that not every standard will be assessed in the fall) and then click on the following to access the survey via Edline:  Elementary Report Card .

Laptop Deployment

We will be delivering laptops to your building on Tuesday June 17th. We will have a team there starting 1 hour prior to classes starting until 1 hour after dismissal. You can stop by and pick up your laptop before or after school or during your planning or lunch period. At the pickup, you will need to complete the Asset Liability Form and you will receive some orientation documentation that will help you get started on your new laptop which is loaded with Windows 8.1.

In preparation for this, you should make sure all your data is backed up.

When you pick up your new laptop, you have the option of keeping your old laptop to get your through the end of the school year without disruption (if you choose to turn in your old laptop, please make sure you bring the power cord as well). However your old computer is not to be reassigned or loaned to another staff member. IT will be collecting all old laptops by September 30th for redeployment where it is most needed.

We will be offering in-person training in your building on June 18th after school. This will be a 90 minute session with 60 minutes of instruction and 30 minutes available for Q&A or 1-on-1 assistance. Our pilot testers have emphasized that training is critical to being productive with your new laptop and you will be paid for 1 hour of this training session. Please sign up through the Professional Development website so we can plan appropriately. In addition, there will be training offered from June 20th through the 27th at 3:30pm and 4 sessions throughout the day on June 30th that you may sign up for through the Professional Development website. Please take advantage of one of these training opportunities.
