Live your life each day as you would climb a mountain.  An occasional glance towards the summit keeps the goal in mind, but many beautiful scenes are to be observed from each new vantage point.

Staff Appreciation Week FYI…
Spinning PTA combines all the staff (counselor/nurse/teachers/para/office) and celebrates them during the week of 4/30 – 5/4.  Stop by the Staff Workroom daily for a surprise…

Viking Store
The hours for the Viking Store are as follows:

8:30 to 8:45
11:30 to 1:00
3:16 to 3:30

Kindergarten students should be sent in a group at the end of their session.

Computer Lab
Our technician from ITC said that when playing video clips (not games) on the computers in the lab and they seem to lock up, it’s due to the memory in the computers.  If you hit pause for 15 -30 seconds, the computer will then play fine.

Opportunity

Are you looking to make a difference in the life of a child?

Our Indian Education Program is looking for building advocates.  Certificated or classified, we know that your partnership can help our students be the best they can be!

Our program is federally funded with some much targeted objectives.  While each of these is focused on academics, threaded throughout is the importance of having a culturally competent approach to each and every interaction.  This begins with relationships, hence we are asking you to be that relationship builder – someone our students can connect with at school; thereby creating a “safe place” for them to come to if they need assistance.  Your role then is to convey these needs to our Specialists Laura and Michelle (contact information is available at the bottom of this letter) who will then follow up with additional resources when appropriate and family connections.

This is our first year with this type of support, so we are starting off with some simple goals:

·         March:
-          Meet and greet each of the students on your list.
-          Connect weekly with each of your students with either a “hello” or “how are you?”
-          Introduce yourself to your student’s teacher(s).
·         April:
-          Connect weekly with each of your students.
-          Coordinate one group meeting with your students and an Indian Education Specialist.  The purpose of this meeting will be to have all your students become familiar with each other and know that they are not the only ones.  We can supply some simple treats.
·         May:
-          Connect weekly with each of your students.
-          Complete inventory (to be mailed in April) for each student.
-          Provide any input to counselor/administrator about 2012/2013 class placement as appropriate.
·         June:
-          Connect weekly with each of your students.
-          Have final group meeting with all students.  Simple treats will be provided.
Thank you again for your partnership with our program.  In the coming days you will be contact by the Specialists to provide you with your student list.

With much appreciation for all you do for our students.

The Walk-a-thon will be on Friday, April 27 from 1:00 to 3:00.  Classroom sign-up is on the clipboard on the workroom counter and available right away.  Jolie Moxley, coordinator for this event would like to come by on Friday during lunch to get your students excited about this event.

Head Lice
We have had numerous cases of head lice reported in the last two weeks. Please make sure that you are sending letters home that the nurse puts in your box.  In addition, it’s very important to remember:

Common ways head lice are spread include:
  • Coming into direct contact with an already infested person.  In schools, it is common for children to transfer head lice during recess, while riding on the school bus, or during classroom activities where they sit in close groups together.
  • Sharing infested items such as hats, scarves, coats, hair accessories, hair brushes, or stuffed animals.
  • Sitting or lying on a bed, couch, pillow or carpet that that been infested with head lice.
Prevention in classroom
  • Do a deep thorough vacuum of carpets, fabric furniture like sofas etc. and wash cushion covers.
  • Some fabric items may be damaged by washing at high temperatures so try sealing in air tight plastic bags for at least two weeks. This should be enough time for nits to hatch and adult lice to die which they must if they are unable to feed.

Tardy slips/Attendance
We are out of our reusable lunch tickets and low on our reusable tardy slips.  Please remember to send them back to the office on a regular basis.

Please make sure to mark any student that is not present when the tardy bell rings as absent.  If they arrive without a tardy slip and you have marked them absent, send them to the office for a tardy slip.  If they arrive with a tardy slip and you forgot to mark them absent, mark them absent.  We adjust each student that is tardy in the system with notes regarding their tardies.  This is a very useful tool as the year progresses and becomes part of their record. Teachers must mark each student daily. If you mark a student absent in error, please change it immediately in TAC to present. The automatic school messenger will call their house.

Take your child to work day
Forms need to be turned in to the office as soon as you receive them.  Please remember to mark students absent if they do not come to school that day.

Staff Lounge
Our forks have returned, unfortunately, they have been caught lying in the sink waiting for someone else to wash them, along with some dirty dishes.  Please clean up after yourselves.  We haven’t gone 2 days without dirty dishes left in the sink for some time…we can do this, together!
